Why won’t my Wi-Fi extender connect to my router?

Here’s why Wifi Range Extenders won’t connect to Wifi Router! Wifi extender acts as an intermediate or bridge between a Wi-Fi router and a Wi-Fi device that is outside the range of a Wi-Fi router’s signal. Wi-Fi extender connects to an existing Wi-Fi network, and it acts as a wireless access point for Wi-Fi devices.

Come closer to the router: Most people assist Wi-Fi routers that will broadcast a Wi-Fi signal throughout the home and so their wireless devices can have internet access. But sometimes, a wireless signal is not strong enough to cover the entire house. When you come closer to the router, you will get a strong signal, and you will move far away from the router, then you will get a weak Wi-Fi signal.

Building structure may affect your Wi-Fi router signal: The signal bars in mobile phones and laptops show the strength of the Wi-Fi connection. Sometimes, the building structure weakens the signal range when it goes through the building’s walls and floors.

Repositioning the Wi-Fi router to different locations will help you to solve the problem. Reposition or Fix Wi-Fi extenders in your building: If repositioning or any other method is not possible for your building structure, then use a Wi-Fi extender. This will extend the distance of wireless connection for reaching further areas.

The SSID name of the Wi-Fi extender is the same as the router. For example, if the name of your router is “Sam,” then the SSID name of your Wi-Fi extender may be “SamExt.” When the user cannot be able to connect to the weak router signal, then he will connect to the Wi-Fi extender by using the SSID name.

Improper wireless settings:

You should match the settings of the wireless extender to the Wi-Fi router configuration. If you failed to perform the right settings, then your extender will not be connected to your Wi-Fi router.

Connection failure due to distance issues:

Fix the respective wireless extenders with an appropriate distance of receiving the router signal. This is because more distance between devices leads to a poor connection between the devices. Try to position your extender at the right distance to make sure of receiving the Wi-Fi signal.

Sharing the same network by high traffic devices:

Make sure that you have other devices that generate a lot of network traffic. You can then move or connect this device near the range of the Wi-Fi extender or directly connect this device to the wifi router for long-range using an Ethernet Cable. Sometimes, the Wi-Fi connection may be affected by external devices or external waves in your building.

Mismatching firmware configurations:

The outdated Wi-Fi extender may fail to connect to your Wi-Fi router. The configuration of the updated Wi-Fi router does not match with the outdated extender configurations. Try to upgrade your extender with the latest version of the router and solve this problem.

Forget the router name or SSID:

Sometimes, Wi-Fi users may forget the SSID or name of the router. So, they cannot be able to connect the Wi-Fi extender to a Wi-Fi router. The nearby Wi-Fi connection will be shown on your device, which helps you to identify your Wi-Fi router.

Forget the Wi-Fi password:

The usage of the wrong password never permits your extender to connect to your Wi-Fi router. This will make you reconfigure your router and change the password settings. How to solve this problem? If your Wi-Fi extender cannot connect to the Wi-Fi router, then you need to reset your extender.

  • The location of the reset button in the extender may vary depending on the brand.
  • The reset button will present at the back of your extender, and press it for 10 seconds using a needle.
  • This will reset all the current settings and allows you to modify your extender to your wish.
  • Check if another similar network is available in your area by using other devices like phones, tablets, laptops, etc.

You will need to identify your Wi-Fi router’s IP address to change the settings of your extender and router. Try to reboot your router and extender and rescan it again. Change the password and username of the router and extender and note this information for further connection.

Go to Settings > Status to check the internet status of your extender. If everything is OK as shown below, your extender is successfully connected to your router. Connect your devices to the extender wirelessly or via an Ethernet cable.

Should Wi-Fi extender be closer to router or device?

Was this article helpful? Yes No | 14 people found this helpful in last 30 days This article will guide you how to position your NETGEAR extender effectively. NETGEAR WiFi range extenders help you keep mobile devices, media players, and computers connected to Wi-Fi with a reliable connection and expanded coverage in every corner of your home. Tip: If you have to use a different location, move the Extender closer to the device, but still within the wireless range of the router. Always check the color of Link Rate symbol on the extender to gauge the connection of the wireless router and the extender. Green is best, Amber is good, while Red is poor. The best connection is established when there is a clear line of sight between the Extender and the wireless router and also a clear line of sight between the Extender and the computer you are using. If this straight path is blocked by a thick wall or other materials, move the Extender to a different location half-way between the computer and the router. If there is no power outlet nearby, or you prefer to place the Extender elsewhere, move the Extender closer to the computer. If the Link Rate LED is green or amber and the PC to Extender Connection LED is green, the Extender is working as expected. The extender relies on your wireless router or access point for a internet connection. The extender loses internet access if:

The wireless router or access point loses internet connection. The wireless settings on the wireless router or access point are changed. The Wi-Fi signal of the wireless router or access point fails to reach the extender. The extender is out of range of the wireless router or access point.
